Manager engagement is falling faster than team engagement

Manager engagement is falling faster than team engagement

Gallup’s State of the Global Workplace 2026 report puts global employee engagement at 20% in 2025, its lowest level since 2020 and a second consecutive annual decline. The detail matters: manager engagement fell from 27% in 2024 to 22% in 2025. Engagement among individual contributors—employees without management responsibilities—was broadly stable.

Our perspective

Company-wide surveys and action plans can miss the particular pressures on managers. They handle competing priorities, coordination gaps and problems between departments. Gallup’s figures do not establish the cause of those pressures in a particular business, but they make the management role worth examining separately. Listening to managers individually can help identify that workload and estimate the organisational cost behind it.
